Max Planck Computing and Data Facility (MPCDF)
The Max Planck Computing and Data Facility (MPCDF) in Garching near Munich is a competence center of the Max Planck Society. It focuses on application development and optimization, data management for big data projects, the operation of a central high-performance computing, the operation of computing clusters for Max Planck Institutes and the provision of a modern data infrastructure including long-term archiving.

Supercomputers
The current supercomputers are the Intel system Cobra with Intel SkyLake processors and OmniPath interconnect (theoretical peak performance: approx. 11 PFlop/s), installed in spring 2018, and the Lenovo system Raven with Intel IceLake processors, Nvidia A100 GPUs and InfiniBand interconnect (theoretical peak performance: approx. Since 2024, additional computing support has been provided by the HPC system Viper, which is based on the latest BullSequana XH3000 platform from Atos and is equipped with AMD EPYC™ CPUs and Instinct™ accelerators.
HPC and AI application support
Application support is provided to all Max Planck Institutes with high-end computing needs.
Services related to data science solutions
The Data Science team supports the development and deployment of data management solutions for big data projects.
Archive systems
Large volumes of experimental data and data from simulations with supercomputers are managed and stored for long periods of time. HSM systems have been in use since the 1970s. They contain data that is more than 30 years old.
